Itinerary

Day 1 UK - Tromsø

Today, you’ll start your Norwegian adventure with a flight to Tromsø where on arrival, we'll drive to your quayside hotel for a four-night stay. This vibrant city is surrounded by snow-capped peaks and majestic fjords and is famous for its role as the ‘Gateway to the Arctic’. This evening, over a welcome drink and dinner, you’ll get to know your fellow travellers. Meals included: D

Day 2 Tromsø

In the summer months, Tromsø is famous for its midnight sun, yet it offers an equally incredible ambience in the winter with its dark polar nights. Enjoy some free time this morning before heading to the Polar Museum with your Holiday Director. With it's location far to the north, Tromso has been the starting point for many arctic expeditions and the museum tells the story of the explorers, adventurers and researchers of the polar region. Later your Local Guide will take you to visit some of the city’s highlights. The modern architecture of the Arctic Cathedral possesses a striking iceberg-like design but take a few moments to admire the glass mosaic window on its eastern side which dominates the interior. We’ll round off our sightseeing tour by taking the cable car to the top of Mount Storsteinen for panoramic views of the city below. Tromsø is at the heart of the Northern Lights zone, and this panoramic viewpoint is considered one of the best places in the world to witness this natural phenomenon. If luck smiles upon us, your Local Guide will be on hand to provide tips on how to capture the perfect picture of the lights as the colours dance across the sky. Meals included: B

Day 3 Tromsø

This morning we’ll head to Breivikeidet, the gateway to the Lyngen Alps. Here, you will learn the art of dog-sledding before heading out on a ride through tree-lined trails and open terrain. During the ride, you and your fellow travellers will each have the opportunity to musher the sled – it’s not too hard as the dogs are eager to follow the sled in front. Following the adventure, we’ll warm up by the fireplace and enjoy a warm drink and traditional lunch of moose or reindeer stew as our guides share stories about the local wildlife and daily life of the sled-pulling huskies. This afternoon has been left free for you to enjoy Tromsø at leisure. Take some time to wander through charming streets lined with colourful houses or discover the city’s rich heritage at the Tromsø University Museum which houses exhibits on Sami culture, archaeology and learn about the area’s traditions. This evening why not join an optional cruise in to the total darkness of the Arctic fjords surrounding the city. The captain will set sail in the direction where the clearest weather conditions have been predicted with the hope of observing the Northern Lights. Meals included: B,L

Day 4 Tromsø

Today has been left free for you to relax and explore at your own pace. You may indulge in a short walk to the Polaria Museum where you can learn about the array of creatures that thrive in the waters of Arctic regions. Or you might like to step into one of the many cafes, bars or restaurants to sample some of the local delicacies and soak up the wintery Norwegian atmosphere. This evening, we'll journey north of Tromsø to a reindeer camp owned by a local Sami reindeer herding family. Sit back and enjoy a sledding ride around the valley which is in an ideal location to observe the aurora borealis and hopefully the sky will be clear for us tonight. You’ll have the chance to feed the reindeer before warming up around the fire of a Sami hut. After a traditional meal your Sami guide will talk about life as a reindeer herder and perform a traditional Sami song, known as a joik. Meals included: B,D

Day 5 Tromsø - UK

Today we will transfer you to the airport for your return flight to the UK. Meals included: B

Norway - Tromso - Evening Northern Lights Cruise

Cruise into the total darkness of the Arctic fjords and Polar nights. We will depart Tromsø and set sail for where the clearest weather conditions for the night have been predicted. The crew will work together and keep their eyes out for clear skies or a gap in the cloud layer. Stay warm in the heated loungers and grab a drink or snack from the onboard cafe while waiting for the Northern Lights to appear. If the Aurora are spotted you can dress warmly and go outside on deck to admire the lights in the night sky. Guides will share their knowledge and personal stories of the Northern Lights, from mythical stories from around the world to the scientific explanation of the Northern Lights. Some nights the Aurora shines bright in the sky and dances with different colours, while on other nights she's a bit shy and is only faintly visible or may not visible at all.
